Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) had earlier started operating form May 7 after curfew relaxation. Madras High Court order to close the liquor shop on following the Supreme Court’s stay order.
On Friday, the TN government ordered to reopen the state-run TASMAC from May 16 till 10 am to 5 pm. Under a certain condition that 500 tokens will be issued to a particular shop every day.
Working hours of the state-run Tasmac liquor shops in Tamilnadu have been extended by two hours, Now, liquor outlets will down their shutters at 7 pm, instead of 5 pm, according to the sources.
the Tamil Nadu state government had announced a token system for purchasing alcohol. Tokens are of 7 different colors, orange, green, red, blue, and so on. Each color is for each day of the week. Every Tasmac outlet is equipped and ready with these tokens. However, only 500 tokens per day, are allowed to be distributed. Each token has details of the shop’s designated number, time for purchase, and the day.
However, it was not clear whether the cap on the number of customers = 500 per day, at each shop will be revised in tune with the extension of the working hours. Liquor shops in Chennai and Tiruvallur remain closed. The shops on the fringes of Chengalpet and Kancheepuram district that fall under the jurisdiction of Greater Chennai Police are also not open.
Reports suggest that liquor worth Rs 133.1 crore were sold in Tamil Nadu yesterday.
After the Supreme Court stayed the Madras High Court’s order on closure of TASMAC shops in Tamil Nadu, token-based sales (500 tokens per day in each shop) of liquor was rolled out in the state.
