CITY CORPORATION TO LAUNCH ON STREET PARKING IN THE
CITY’s MAIN AREA :
Chennai City Corporation under the special project Smart City has taken an initiative to launch the smart parking management for the benefit of the public. This method is an efficient and effective way to manage the parking system by blending in the technology to this concept. This will roll out its new app for smart parking across the city in 4,583 spaces in Anna Nagar, Purasawalkam High Road, Marina Beach & Besant Nagar, Triplicane and other areas this month. This is done for both on-street and off-street parking covering all the residential areas too. This automated parking technology helps in reducing the traffic caused due to driving around in search of an open parking space.
The launch in T.Nagar will be delayed due to the festive season and pending approvals from Tamil Nadu generation and Tangedco & police.
The civic body has also started marking 193 equivalent car spaces (ECS) along Khader Nawaz Khan Road in Nungambakkam where drivers will be charged premium parking fees Rs.40 per ECS
People heading to the places in the city can check availability of parking spaces on GCC smart parking system app. As one approaches the place they will be alerted of the distance to the closest parking of the vacant slots. Tamilarasan, director of Toorq Media Services, which is the service provider for the project. They have completed marking around 4000 slots of the 5700 slots allotted across the city. They have begun installing cameras near each slot. So far, 110 cameras have been set up in areas like Triplicane, Wallajah Road, Besant Nagar, Pondy Bazaar and other roads in T.nagar.,
Raj Cherubal, managing director of Chennai Smart Cities Limited said testing of cameras will begin from Monday. ”We will start testing the application and the cameras. The launch may happen soon after the testing process is done.
PARKING PROCESSING RATE :
Once launched, people can download the application on their mobile and find slots for parking. Parking cost for a bike will be Rs 5 per hour and for cars Rs 20 per hour. After booking the slot they can pay the fee using any digital platform. The user is also sent an alert 55 minutes later about the time limit coming to an end and can pay extra for an extension
The app on the user’s phone will be limited to showing the location of parking spaces and the number of vacant slots. After logging in fare details and duration of parking is noted said an official from Chennai Smart City Ltd.
P.S: If this parking system works out, it will avoid parking discrepancies and thereby avoid traffic snarls on city roads.
