Chennai has got 67 new green parks :
Chennai’s newly added areas will finally provide the much-needed lung space as Chennai Corporation plans to set up 67 parks this financial year and a total of 23 parks will be ready by April 2020. By clearing plots of vacant lands, as many as 200 new parks would be set up in Chennai.
The new parks will be set up across all zones with 13 in Ambattur, 11 in Shollinganallur, 10 each in Perungudi and Madhavaram.
Apart from the parks, 13 playgrounds are being planned to be set up in the city at 15 Crores budget. The Chennai Corporation already has 632 parks, now they have identified more than 400 open spaces across the city to be developed into parks and playfields. The new parks will be developed nearby the residential neighborhoods, in addition to the 612 existing parks across 15 zones.
As per WHO norms, each resident should have at least 1 square meter (Sqm) of open green space area. Chennai has just 0.46 Sqm of green space per person. The city is ranked sixth in terms of green cover after Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru rural, Hubli, and Bengaluru city. We have more than 6000 km in road area, 33000 streets, 826 km in waterways and 210 lakes & ponds around which if we plant saplings and develop parks, we can surpass the WHO norms.
Corporation Commissioner G Prakash gave a statement, “As per the Government announcement 200 new parks will be set up in Chennai by clearing plots of vacant land. We want to improve the lung space of the city. We are getting funds from Chennai Megacity development mission. These parks will have facilities on par with those in the core city areas such as compound walls, walking pathway, greenery, children’s play equipment, open gym, yoga stage, water supply, drainage, rainwater harvesting, compost pits, toilet facilities, and other landscapes.”
